How Long Do Gel Nails Last? (And How to Make Them Last Longer)
Usually two to three weeks. Here's what shortens a gel manicure's life and how to keep yours looking fresh for longer.
How long do gel nails last? A well-done gel manicure usually lasts around two to three weeks before it chips, lifts or grows out too far. On toes, gel often lasts even longer. How long yours lasts depends on the preparation, and on how you treat your nails afterwards.
What makes gel nails last
- Good preparation. Clean, lightly buffed nails with the cuticles pushed back so the gel grips.
- Thin, even layers, each fully cured under the lamp.
- Sealed edges. The top coat should "cap" the tip of the nail to stop chipping.
What shortens their life
- Using your nails as tools: opening cans, scraping labels
- Long soaks in hot water and harsh cleaning products without gloves
- Picking or peeling at a lifted edge (this also damages the natural nail)
Aftercare tips
- Wear gloves for washing up and cleaning.
- Moisturise your cuticles daily with cuticle oil or hand cream.
- Don't peel. If a corner lifts, book a fix or a proper removal.
- Get it removed properly by soaking or gentle filing, never by pulling.
