Gel vs Acrylic Nails: Which Is Right for You?
Gel is lighter and more natural; acrylic is stronger and adds length. Here's how to decide which suits your nails and your life.
It's the most common question at the nail desk: gel vs acrylic nails, which one should I get? Both give you a glossy, long-lasting finish that ordinary polish can't match, but they're made differently, feel different and suit different people. Here's a straightforward comparison to help you choose.
What are gel nails?
Gel is a polish-like product brushed onto your natural nail in thin layers. Each layer is cured (hardened) under a UV or LED lamp for a short time. The result is flexible, glossy and natural-looking.
There are two main kinds:
- Gel polish: a thin colour layer over your natural nail. No added length.
- Builder gel: a thicker gel that strengthens the nail and can add a little length or structure.
What are acrylic nails?
Acrylic is made by mixing a liquid (monomer) with a powder (polymer) into a bead that the technician sculpts onto the nail or onto a tip. It hardens in the air into a strong, rigid layer. Acrylic is the classic choice for long, sculpted or dramatic shapes.
Gel vs acrylic: side by side
| Gel | Acrylic | |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Natural, thin, very glossy | Thicker, can be sculpted to any shape |
| Length | Best on natural length (builder gel adds a little) | Can add a lot of length |
| Feel | Light and flexible | Hard and strong |
| Smell | Almost none | Noticeable while being applied |
| Durability | Around two to three weeks with good care | Several weeks with regular refills |
| Removal | Soaked or gently filed off | Soaked off, takes longer |
| Maintenance | Replace or redo each visit | Refills as the nail grows out |
Which should you choose?
Choose gel if you:
- want a natural look on your own nail length
- prefer a light, flexible feel
- change colours often
- want a quicker, gentler removal
Choose acrylic if you:
- want long nails or a dramatic shape
- have nails that break easily and want a hard protective layer
- are happy to come back for refills
Not sure? Builder gel sits in between: stronger than gel polish, lighter than acrylic. Ask your technician at the start of your appointment.
What about nail art?
Both work well with nail art. At Siriana, detailed designs are made with nail printing machines, which print crisp, identical patterns onto the prepared nail before it is sealed. Read more in Printed Nail Art in Kenya.

Frequently asked questions
Which lasts longer, gel or acrylic?
Acrylic, with regular refills, can be kept going for longer. A gel set usually lasts around two to three weeks. See How Long Do Gel Nails Last?
Which is better for weak nails?
Builder gel or acrylic both add strength. Gel is gentler to remove, which matters if your nails are already thin.
Can I switch from acrylic to gel?
Yes. Have the acrylic removed properly first, then start with gel on your natural nails.
How long does the appointment take?
It depends on the service and any nail art. Our guide How Long Does a Manicure and Pedicure Take? gives typical times.
